Silver Jubilee

German Federal Constitutional Court Justice Prof. Dr. Dr. Udo Di Fabio made the introductory speech kicking off the 25th jubilee celebrating the inception of the Market Economy Foundation and the Kronberger Scientific Council. He addressed the issue of justice in the context of the choice between a system of equity based on equality of opportunity, and one based on need. In accordance with this discussion, he argued that social security reform would be “a well-founded attempt to once again provide for the preeminence of a society based on achievement over one based purely on need, as the road to the heart of society and individual autonomy is paved with individual achievement, not on support.” Our society, which is characterized as typically European and culturally Western, is based on the assumption of individual freedom: “Those who understand this fundamental idea have the key to justice in their hands,” the justice concluded.
