Swift Prize for Economic Satire Goes to Volker Reiche

The Market Economy Foundation awards the Swift Prize for the first time in 2008

For the first time, the Market Economy Foundation awarded the Swift Prize for Economic Satire. Volker Reiche (above center), the cartoonist whose comic strip “Strizz” appears in the feature pages of the Saturday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, is the 2008 prize winner.

The head of the supervisory board, Prof. Theo Siegert (above right, also pictured with the chairman of the advisory board, Prof. Nikolaus Schweickart) presented the prize, which accompanies a €10,000 award, at the foundation’s annual meeting in Kronberg im Taunus. The prize, awarded for the first time, is designed in the tradition of Jonathan Swift, the English satirist and author of “Gulliver’s Travels,” and seeks to recognize creative works in the discourse surrounding the German market economic order founded in freedom, competition, and individual responsibility.

By recognizing the prominent achievement of a prize winner, the Market Economy Foundation seeks to raise understanding of a market economy based on economic incentives. The prize distinguishes appropriate works from the journalistic, entrepreneurial, academic, or political fields that have contributed to the strengthening or further development of a free, market based societal order that respects human dignity.

Volker Reiche used the prize awarding ceremony as an opportunity to sign his newly published book about the sixth year of his titular character “Strizz,” an office worker whose daily (mis)adventures in the comic strip question politicians’ words and unmask them through philosophical questioning.
